<image:title>Postcards - Postcard #8: Day Trips & Detours</image:title>
<image:caption>Between weekend plans and last-minute decisions, these little day trips ended up being some of my favorite parts of the summer. Venice I did this one totally solo! Just me, a book, and the maze of canals. I wandered through the main square, popped into an art gallery, and eventually found a quiet little lunch spot right on the river. The city was gorgeous (of course), but this was also the moment I realized I’m not much of a solo traveler. I missed having someone to talk to, to laugh with, or just to share the view. Beautiful, but kind of lonely. Luckily, I’d already been before, so I still love it. Tuscany with My Parents My parents came to Florence, and we drove out to stay at Banfi Castle for the 4th of July. It was stunning. We toured the vineyard, did a wine tasting, lounged by the castle pool all afternoon, and had dinner on site. It felt peaceful and luxurious in a way I hadn’t experienced yet this summer. After Tuscany, we headed to Rome and stayed in the same place we did back in May. I also got to see my aunt and uncle before they left for a cruise, and we even stopped by the mall with the ancient ruins inside. It was such a fun full-circle moment getting to show them all the places I’ve come to know. Pisa & Lucca This was a fun, easy day trip with one of my girlfriends and a few of our guy friends. We started off in Pisa, where it was raining but only briefly. We took the classic leaning tower photos (you kind of have to) and then caught a train to Lucca. The rest of the day was spent walking the city walls, drinking beers, and just hanging out. Lucca is super pretty, really peaceful, but there wasn’t a ton to do beyond that. Still, it was a chill day and the company made it better. Cinque Terre This was the day trip that made me feel better about solo travel. I got to Monterosso around 11am and immediately headed to the beach. After a few hours of soaking up the sun, I took the train to Riomaggiore and grabbed a seafood cone before lying out on the rocks with the most beautiful view of those iconic colorful buildings right behind me. It was quiet and peaceful in the best way, and this time I didn’t mind being alone. They may not have been the biggest trips, but each one added something different to this adventure. A reminder that sometimes, a single day is more than enough.</image:caption>

<image:title>Postcards - Postcard #7: Pierogi, Pride, and Polish Roots</image:title>
<image:caption>This trip was really special. It came right after all my friends left at the end of session A, and I had a short break before session B began. I was in a weird in-between space processing goodbyes, but not quite ready to meet new people yet. I hadn’t updated the site in a while because, honestly, I just didn’t have it in me. But Poland? It gave me space to breathe again. We landed in Warsaw late Thursday night and checked into our Airbnb, which was actually really nice. The next morning, I crossed something off my bucket list: making pierogis in Poland. The cooking class was incredible. We learned about the different pierogi shapes and what they mean, got to roll out the dough, fill and shape each one, and then ate them all family-style. It was easily one of my favorite moments. I even met a girl from Budapest who I might visit soon. After that, my friend and I wandered around Old Town, getting lost in the prettiest streets. I somehow convinced her to go to the Chopin Museum with me, and I’m so glad we did. It was really interactive and beautifully done. If you know me, you know I love the piano, and seeing how Chopin composed his work was such a cool experience. We ended the night with burgers and beers at a cozy spot called Hopito, which had such a friendly, communal vibe. Saturday started with the Warsaw Rising Museum, which we explored for over two hours. It was so informative and moving. My friend is a huge WWII history buff, and I’m glad we could share that together. For lunch, we headed back to Old Town, where I had the best golumpki ever, aside from my mom's and grandma’s, of course. Walking through those streets, eating the food I grew up with, and hearing the language made me feel so close to my Polish roots. That afternoon, we crossed the river and went to the Vodka Museum, which, to my surprise, was fascinating. I learned so much and, yes, tried a few samples at the end. Let’s just say I appreciated the history more than the tasting. We had dinner in a neighborhood that really reminded me of home — string lights, people walking through the streets, restaurants on every corner. It was like a Polish version of Park Ave. The next morning, we caught a train to Kraków. After a quick shopping stop in the train station mall, we explored Old Town, which felt more open and spread out than Warsaw’s, but just as beautiful. I stocked up on gifts for my Polish relatives and, of course, we ended the day with more pierogis. The following day was incredibly heavy. We woke up at 4 a.m. to visit Auschwitz and Birkenau. It’s hard to put into words what that experience was like, but it’s something I truly believe everyone should do. I called my parents halfway through because I was overwhelmed, but our guides were amazing and gave me space to take it all in. It was one of the most emotional days of my life, and I’m grateful I was able to be present and reflect. That evening, we took it slow, walked around, did some more shopping, and found a great place for some schnitzel before calling it a night. On our last morning, I packed all my gifts and souvenirs and went into town. Before heading to the airport, I followed my friend Ana Clara’s advice and got a hot dog from Zabka (basically Poland’s 7-Eleven), which felt random but ended up being weirdly delicious. I also had one last pierogi meal because how could I not? Poland is hands-down my favorite place I’ve ever been. I felt deeply connected to it in ways that surprised me. I already can’t wait to go back.</image:caption>

<image:title>Postcards - Postcard #6: Sun, Sea, and Dead Poets</image:title>
<image:caption>We arrived in Corfu early Friday morning after a late-night travel day, and the second we stepped off the plane, it already felt like the perfect weekend. We spent most of Friday and Saturday exactly how you'd hope to in a Greek island town… lying out in the sun, swimming, and eating the most incredible food. Everything felt warm and unhurried in the best way. Friday night, we went to dinner at a cliffside place right near our apartment, and the staff really took to us. They gave us amazing recs and even took shots with us! Saturday night, we found a place on the main street, and although it was a tad overpriced, we enjoyed people-watching and the beautiful scenery. On Sunday, we explored both the old and new forts, took our time wandering through town, and just soaked in the last few hours before heading back to Florence. Also, I brought Dead Poets Society with me to read on the trip and finished it before dinner Saturday with a full-on emotional breakdown. Obviously, I watched the movie as soon as I got home, too, because crying once just wasn’t enough. Corfu was simple and beautiful. A few days of sunshine, good food, and space to breathe.</image:caption>

<image:title>Postcards - Postcard #5: Markets, Mountains, and Mint Tea</image:title>
<image:caption>Morocco was everything I imagined and more. We arrived in Marrakech early in the morning, and thankfully, our hotel transfer was able to find us quickly. We were greeted with traditional mint tea and got a full rundown of recommendations, plus a lunch reservation at a beautiful rooftop restaurant. I ordered a tajine and these Moroccan dumplings, which were incredible. We wandered the markets afterward, where we ended up getting our heads wrapped, buying pashminas, learning how to make argan oil from a Berber woman, sitting through a very long (but interesting) tea and medicinal cream demonstration, getting henna, shopping for gifts, and somehow never actually finding the main square. That night, we met up with friends at another rooftop restaurant for dinner. One of the funniest parts of the trip was how often we were called the Spice Girls by people on the street. I was personally told I looked like Shakira and Lady Gaga at least twice, and Emily was dubbed "Ginger." The catcalling stories were definitely not exaggerated, but we did our best to laugh it off. The next day, we went to the Atlas Mountains. We took a two-hour hike through the valley and then waded through a river to our guide’s village, where we cooked couscous and tajine with his family. They were so kind and welcoming, and the pastries they served were honestly some of the best things I’ve eaten. After lunch, we had a slow walk back to the car with the most beautiful views along the way. That night we were so tired we stayed in and ordered Papa Johns. I know. But it actually hit the spot. The following day was one of the most surreal experiences of the entire trip. We visited a small argan oil collective outside of the city and then headed to the desert. We rode camels, which was terrifying at first and I definitely screamed a little, but it was the most amazing experience, and then we went quad biking across the sand. I could’ve done that all afternoon. We ended the evening swimming in a desert pool, followed by dinner and a fire show. It all felt unreal. Our last day was slower. We visited the Secret Garden, walked through the markets again, and toured the Bahia Palace. We grabbed drinks at a rooftop bar and then headed back to our riad to order in dinner. Sadly, I didn’t end the trip on the highest note. I started feeling feverish and nauseous and ended up getting sick. I showered quickly after walking Katie home and went to bed early since we had to be up at 3 a.m. for our flight. Despite the rough ending, Morocco was such a meaningful experience. It was vibrant, intense, welcoming, and totally unlike anywhere I’ve been before. I’m really grateful I got to experience so much in just a few days.</image:caption>

<image:title>Postcards - Postcard #4: Saltwater Days and Sunset Dinners</image:title>
<image:caption>We arrived in Sardinia after a long night sleeping in the Rome airport, which was exactly as chaotic as it sounds. Things didn’t get easier right away, and our hotel was giving us problems at check-in, but once we finally got settled, it all felt worth it. The first two days were spent exactly how I hoped: lying out on the beach, swimming in the pool, and taking in the sunshine. Abby and I definitely underestimated the Sardinian sun and ended up with pretty intense sunburns, which sent us scrambling for aloe and supplies. But even with our burns, we made the most of it. We played mermaids in the pool, read our books, and just enjoyed doing nothing. Then came our boat day, which completely exceeded all of our expectations. We cruised along the coast, hiked to a lighthouse, and stopped to jump into the water wherever we could. Our skipper, Andrea, was the sweetest and even let Sofia drive the boat toward the end. When we got back, we had lunch at the hotel and spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool before dinner. That evening, we were all sitting around talking about how sad we were to leave, even though just two days earlier we weren’t sure we even wanted to be there. On our last day, we had breakfast at the hotel before checking out and heading to the airport. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any postcards before we left, but Sofia managed to get us into the airport lounge, which made the travel day feel a little more special. I ate about a hundred saltines before our flight, which felt weirdly comforting. The flight and train were pretty smooth, and we had a little stop at All’Antico Vinaio during our transfer in Rome. It made me a bit nauseous, so I saved the rest for later and finished up a project on the train back to Florence. Even with the rocky start and a few travel hiccups, Sardinia felt peaceful and really special. It was simple, beautiful, and exactly the kind of weekend I needed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Postcards - Postcard #3: Feathers, Festivals, & F1</image:title>
<image:caption>Originally, I was supposed to head to Milan on Friday, the 23rd, but thanks to a surprise(-ish) train strike, I pivoted and took a morning train on Saturday instead (a very Italian experience, honestly). I met up with my friend Tyler, who had flown out to spend the week with me in Florence and then gone ahead to Milan on Thursday. As soon as I arrived, we visited the iconic Duomo and wandered through Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, aka the really fancy place with all the designer shops that I was afraid to even breathe in. Tyler took me to a rooftop spot called The Dome, which had stunning views of the Duomo and possibly the best tiramisu I’ve ever had. We finished off the night with Glovo (Italian Doordash!) and got dinner delivered to the hotel like true modern travelers. The next day, Sunday the 25th, we split up because Tyler wanted to explore the downtown skyscrapers, but I was in more of a "vintage Milan" mood. I headed to the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie to try and see The Last Supper, but there weren’t any openings left. Womp. But, on the way to the Sforzesco Castle, I stumbled into a full-on spring street festival! Festa Alpina di Primavera, to be exact. I had absolutely no clue what it was for, but there were feathered hats, live music, food stalls, and lots of wine. I grabbed a spritz, a box of fresh cherries, fries, and a sandwich with salamelle and zucchini made by the nicest guys who looked like Milanese Mountaineers (???). I had no idea what I was eating or who they were but it was honestly one of the coolest experiences during my travels. I sat in Sempione Park, watched dogs play in the dog park, and soaked it all in while I ate. Afterward, I wandered through the castle, which felt like half museum, half medieval carnival. And because I’m me, I ended the day watching the Monaco Grand Prix with Tyler at The Football Pub, with the Duomo just a few streets away. (Huge congrats to Lando Norris, living legend.) I grabbed a Stonewell cider, took a taxi to the station, and now I’m back in Florence with a heart full of cherries, spritz, and so many weirdly perfect memories.</image:caption>

<image:title>Postcards - Postcard #2: Siena & A Little Chianti Chaos</image:title>
<image:caption>We arrived in Siena on Friday, May 16th, and even though we left just two days later, I’m convinced Tuscany has officially claimed a piece of my heart (and possibly… my hand? More on that in a sec.) Our first stop was the Piazza del Campo, where we grabbed a late lunch at Bar Il Palio. We shared a four cheese pizza and a caprese salad, and I tried a purple spritz, which honestly might’ve changed my life. It tasted like violet, sunshine, and vacation. After lunch, we wandered the city, soaking up every soft golden corner and quiet little alley. Siena feels like it’s been frozen in time but in the most magical way. Saturday was our wine day, and it did not disappoint. We toured two vineyards: first, Lornano Chianti Classico, and then Il Colobaio Agriturismo near San Gimignano, which is a hilltop town straight out of a painting. The wine, the views, and the weather were all perfect. And then… at the second vineyard, the owner asked me to come meet his son (??), gave me his business card (!!), and told me to come back soon (!!!). So, um, ciao to my new Italian husband I guess? Ti amo Francesco! Sunday morning, we said goodbye to Siena and headed to Florence, where the next chapter of this summer begins. But I’m pretty sure I’ll be thinking about those Tuscan hills (and that purple spritz) for a while.</image:caption>

<image:title>Postcards - Postcard #1: Roman Holiday</image:title>
<image:caption>We arrived in Rome on Wednesday, the 14th, and just left this morning… it already feels like a dream. I’ve been to Rome before as a kid, but seeing it again through grown-up eyes (and an Aperol spritz in hand) made it feel brand new. We stayed at the Sina Bernini Bristol, right in the heart of the city. After checking in around noon, we headed straight for the Vatican, wandered the streets, and grabbed lunch at the most chef’s kiss spot called Bottega Vittoria. We split a pizza, a plate of cacio e pepe, and (of course) Aperol spritzes. Heaven. We picked up some rosaries and visited St. Peter’s Square to see the Pope’s balcony, then strolled through town and somehow magically stumbled upon the Trevi Fountain. It was one of those oh wait, we’re actually here moments. We shopped a bit, grabbed walking drinks, and made our way back to the hotel. That night, we met up with some family friends and had dinner at Tullio, a cozy spot tucked right behind our hotel. On Thursday, we had hotel breakfast and then walked past the Spanish Steps on our way to Campo Centrale for the Rome Open (tennis girly behavior). We watched Paolini beat Stearns, saw Tommy Paul take down Hurkacz, and then cheered on our friend Christian Harrison during men’s doubles (my mom literally got his towel, legendary behavior). Oh, and not to brag but… I may or may not have jumped into St. Germaine Hugo's pool at the stadium for €250 cash. Definitely sponsored by Hugo spritzes, but I would 100% do it again. Though I did feel bad for the poor Italian woman who was very concerned for me. That evening, we had dinner near the Spanish Steps, Osteria da Giggi (I think), and ended the night with drinks at the rooftop bar back at our hotel. Views, vibes, vino. What else could a girl want? Friday morning, we had one last breakfast, then packed our bags and headed to our next adventure: Siena. More soon.</image:caption>
